Digital Transformation Consultant: What to Actually Look For
"Digital transformation" is one of the most overused phrases in business technology, which makes it hard to tell a useful consulting engagement from an expensive exercise in buzzwords. A few practical questions help separate the two.
Do they start with your business priorities, or with technology?
A useful engagement starts by understanding what's actually costing your business time or money today, and works backward to specific technology recommendations. If a consultant leads with a list of trendy technologies before understanding your business, that's a warning sign.
Do they give you a phased plan, or an all-at-once overhaul?
Transformation initiatives that try to change everything at once are the ones most likely to stall halfway through, half-implemented. A realistic plan is phased, with visible milestones you can evaluate along the way.
Will they tell you when something isn't worth doing yet?
The most useful consultants will sometimes recommend you wait, or that a specific initiative isn't a good use of budget right now. If every recommendation happens to require more of their services, that's worth questioning.
What a good engagement actually looks like
Expect an assessment of your current state, a prioritized roadmap tied to specific business outcomes, and phased execution you can see progress on, not a single large proposal asking for a long-term commitment upfront.
